A Turkish towel (also called a peshtemal) is a flat-woven cotton towel made on traditional looms in Denizli, Turkey. It's lighter than a terry-cloth towel, dries faster, packs smaller, and gets softer the more you wash it. Hawaii's been quietly using them at the beach for years. We just made one we'd actually use.

Roughly 39 inches by 71 inches. Big enough for one person to lie down comfortably. Small enough to fold into a beach bag without filling it. About half the weight of a standard hotel towel.

100% long-staple Turkish cotton. Hand-loomed in Denizli. No polyester, no microfibre, no synthetic blends.

Yes. Turkish cotton is about twice as absorbent as terry-cloth, despite being half the weight. The first time you use one, it can feel surprising. The towel pulls water faster than you expect, and dries itself out in the breeze while you're still on the beach.

Way less than terry. The flat weave means sand brushes right off. Shake the towel out once and you're good. Compare that to dragging a soaked terry towel home and tipping a beach onto your laundry-room floor.

Machine wash cold, on a normal cycle, with similar colors. Tumble dry low, or hang dry (it'll be dry in an hour or two). Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibers and slows absorbency.

We use reactive dyes designed for long wear, but like any cotton, the colors will mellow gradually over the years. Wash cold, wash with similar colors, and the towel will hold up beautifully for a very long time.

Recommended but not required. A first wash softens the cotton and opens up the fibers, which boosts absorbency. Some people love the crisp feel of a fresh-off-the-loom towel. Either way works.
